Judge alters Trump’s gag order, lets him talk about witnesses and jurors after hush money conviction

A judge has modified Donald Trump’s gag order, freeing the former president to comment about witnesses and jurors in his New York hush money criminal trial but keeping court and prosecution staff off limits. Judge Juan M. Merchan issued his decision Tuesday. Trump’s lawyers had wanted the gag order fully lifted. Trump's lawyers argued there was nothing to justify continued restrictions on Trump’s First Amendment rights after the trial ended May 30 in his conviction for falsifying records to cover up a potential sex scandal. Prosecutors had urged Merchan to keep most of the gag order in place at least until Trump is sentenced on July 11 but said they’d be OK with modifying it.

Public funds for religious charter school would be unconstitutional, Oklahoma high court says

The Oklahoma Supreme Court has ruled that the approval of what would be the nation's first state-funded Catholic charter school is unconstitutional. The court decided Tuesday that the contract between the state and St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual Charter School must be rescinded. Oklahoma's Attorney General warned the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board last year not to approve the contract. But the board voted 3-2 to approve the Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City's application. In its application, the Archdiocese said its vision would be to evangelize students. A group of parents, faith leaders and a public education nonprofit sued to stop the establishment of the school.

A representative for Rowlands confirmed that Cassavetes “speaks for the family.” Rowlands’ mother, the actor Lady Rowlands, also had Alzheimer’s. During the making of “The Notebook,” Gena Rowlands said she channeled her mother.

California governor defends progressive values, says they're an 'antidote' to populism on the right

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has used his State of the State address to defend California's progressive values ahead of a pivotal presidential debate. In a prerecorded speech released Tuesday, Newsom compared Donald Trump's version of the Republican Party to the rise of fascism prior to World War II. He said Democrats' ideals offer “an antidote to the poisonous populism of the right.” Newsom is one of the top surrogates for President Joe Biden's presidential campaign. Biden and Trump will face off in a televised debate on Thursday. Newsom rejected Republican portrayals of California as a failed state. He highlighted the state's economy and its efforts to combat homelessness.

Judge allows disabled voters in Wisconsin to electronically vote from home

A Wisconsin judge is allowing disabled voters in the crucial swing state to vote electronically from home this fall. Dane County Circuit Judge Everett Mitchell issued a temporary injunction Tuesday that allows voters who self-certify that they can't read or mark a paper ballot without assistance to request absentee ballots via email for the November presidential election. The voters argue they can cast those ballots using assistive software. They will still be required to mail the ballots back to local clerks. The injunction is part of a larger lawsuit advocates for disabled voters filed in April contending that many people with disabilities can't cast paper ballots without assistance, violating their right to case a secret ballot.
