Key Takeaways
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard features seven unique companions with rich stories and combat specializations.
- All the companions are romanceable and each offer different ways for players to achieve victory in battle.
For the second day of its Companions Week, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has revealed a new look at Lucanis, Neve, Emmrich, and Harding. From Baldur's Gate to Mass Effect, if there was ever a single, unifying trait in BioWare's titles, it would be the companions that accompany the player on their adventure. Though the company has dabbled in several genres over the years, BioWare's claim to fame has always been strong writing and memorable characters. Dragon Age: The Veilguard chose to embrace this truth, as even its subtitle references the found family that lies at the heart of its narrative.
There are seven companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and though only two can accompany Rook at any time, they can all be found in the Lighthouse, the player's base of operations in the Fade. Each companion is tied to a major faction in The Veilguard, and represents a unique take on a combat specialization that players can unlock by engaging with that faction (or by choosing it during character creation). While there are no returning companions from previous Dragon Age titles, The Veilguard finally gives scout Lace Harding from the Inquisition her time to shine.

BioWare reveals more details about the abilities and personalities of the companions players will meet as they play Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
From August 26 to September 1, BioWare is revealing details about The Veilguard's companions, and has recently shared new screenshots on Twitter. While some of these have already been featured in earlier footage, the pictures of Harding, Neve, Lucanis, Emmrich are all new. Emmrich's skeletal assistant Manfred is also present, who has become something of a fan favorite in the Dragon Age community.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Companions
- Harding – Rogue (The Inquisition)
- This dwarven scout has a positive outlook and a ready bow – as well as unexpected magical powers. At her core, Harding is still a girl from Ferelden; she loves adventure, animals, and nature and is fiercely protective of her family and friends.
- Davrin – Warrior (Grey Wardens)
- Bold and charming, this Grey Warden has made a name for himself as a monster hunter. Though he was raised in a Dalish clan, he craved excitement and adventure. He’d rather make history than reflect on it. Now, he cares for Assan, a young griffon.
- Neve – Mage (Shadow Dragons)
- A cynic fighting for a better future, Neve is both a private detective and a member of Tevinter's rebellious Shadow Dragons. Born and raised in a working-class neighborhood of Minrathous, she does not believe in the superiority of mages.
- Lucanis – Rogue (Antivan Crows)
- Lucanis is an expert assassin for whom the Antivan Crows are a family business. He is poised and pragmatic, but he’d rather not be the center of attention. His focus is usually on his work. Lucanis specializes in executing powerful mages and has earned himself the title Demon of Vyrantium.
- Bellara – Mage (Veil Jumpers)
- Bellara is creative, romantic, and obsessed with uncovering the secrets of ancient Elvhenan. She has a strong sense of self – a clear idea of who she is and what she wants – and will push herself to her limits to find the answers she seeks.
- Taash – Warrior (Lords of Fortune)
- A Qunari dragon hunter allied with the Lords of Fortune, Taash lives for adventure and doesn't mind taking risks. While her interests include sparkling treasures and hitting things with an axe, Taash is also deeply knowledgeable about many topics.
- Emmrich – Mage (The Mourn Watch)
- A necromancer of Nevarra's Mourn Watch, this well-meaning scholar comes complete with a skeletal assistant, Manfred. Emmrich is as serious about his duty to protect innocents from the occult as he is about his studies and his interest in the mysteries of the fade.
While it remains to be seen how the companions in The Veilguard will measure up against other iconic BioWare characters, such as Garrus Vakarian or Bastila Shan, the developers are excited for Dragon Age players to bond with them over the course of their adventure in Northern Thedas. All companions will be romanceable in The Veilguard, and will be available to players regardless of race or gender.
Beyond getting to know them and aiding in their personal quests, companions are also meant to be the key to victory in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Much like Rook themselves, players will need to equip their party members with the right armor, the right weapons, and choose how to build upon their specialization to achieve synergy in combat. Drawing inspiration from Mass Effect 3, the gameplay in Dragon Age: The Veilguard encourages teamwork between the player and their companions. Though the concept is a major departure for the franchise, players will be able to experience it firsthand and make their own judgment on October 31.
